We asked him a few questions to find out more about the experience and skills he brings to the team.
How did you get into sustainability?
I first became interested in the natural world as a child. My passion back then was trees and I started by learning and collecting the leaves of all our native species. Over time, as my curiosity grew, I began to learn about other species, both plant and animal, and the habitats that support them. It wasnโt long before I realised that all was not well with the natural world and that human and business activities were responsible for the destruction and fragmentation of habitats and the extinction of species. This inspired me to go to university, where I studied environmental science and gained a deeper understanding of the issues that affect our planet. Since then, I have helped many businesses achieve their project goals and financial success while caring for the environment at the same time.
Why Nature Positive?
I really like the ethos of Nature Positive and the refreshing approach it is taking to help the business world address the ecological crisis that is facing society. Nature Positive is not like other consultancies I have worked at where the emphasis was on helping the client to be legally compliant for the minimum effort or expense. Nature Positive is exciting because it seeks to work with clients to add value, both financially and reputationally, and secure the best returns for the natural world as well. But Nature Positive would be nothing without its people, and since joining the team, I have been hugely impressed by the knowledgeable people who work there and how collaborative and friendly they are.
In your role at Nature Positive, how do you help businesses become more sustainable?
In my role, I will be working with businesses to identify the risks and opportunities that come about from the way that their business activities interact with the natural environment. This will involve carrying out baseline assessments to identify the nature and scale of the risks/opportunities, helping the businesses set strategies to become nature positive and then helping them make nature-positive thinking and action become business as usual.
What do you do outside of work?
Apart from raising my two teenage sons, when I get a chance, I like to get out into nature and photograph wildlife or sometimes I leave the camera at home and just take my binoculars and check out the many fantastic birds on the Somerset Levels. My other passion is motorbikes: either riding or restoring them.
What country is top of your travel bucket list?
Thatโs a difficult one โ I donโt think I could choose. Iโd really like to go to Japan or New Zealand next, but the continent of Africa is definitely on my bucket list too.
What is your favourite animal?
Humpback whales are really cool โ Iโd really love to see one up close one day and get some great shots for the photo album.
Do you have any pets?
No, but I really want a dog.
As we grow our team, Nature Positive is always on the lookout for people with interest and experience in business and sustainability. If this sounds like you, please get in touch.
