Biodiversity case study: Spirax Sarco Engineering plc

Spirax Sarco Engineering plc (SSE) is a world leader in high-quality products for the control and efficient use of steam and other industrial fluids. Nature Positive was commissioned by SSE to assess the direct biodiversity impacts of its global manufacturing operations.

As part of its wide-ranging sustainability policy, SSE has committed to

    • establishing a target of biodiversity net gain by 2030
    • identifying any harmful direct impacts and dependencies the business has on nature and biodiversity and setting targets for reducing them
    • publishing the results.

SSE engaged Nature Positive to support the company in achieving these commitments.

A baseline biodiversity assessment was undertaken for SSE’s 30 global manufacturing sites and their head office location to understand the key biodiversity impacts of SSE’s operations and to provide a basis upon which to agree targets. Using a combination of available biodiversity data around each site and details of their activities, including any emissions, Nature Positive built up a picture of the potential biodiversity and wider ecosystem service risks of their operations. The data provided by the manufacturing sites enabled Nature Positive to provide a high-level assessment of the biodiversity issues in the company’s supply chain and to highlight the next steps in tackling the target of net gain by 2030.

The report was well received by the board of SSE, who are adopting the recommendations in their refreshed sustainability strategy. This will include making a biodiversity offset equivalent to twice the land area occupied by their entire manufacturing operations.

“Undertaking the assessment with Nature Positive has provided new insights into both our site interactions with habitats and species, and the responses we can make quickly towards 2030 Net Gain,” said Richard Hildersley, Group Energy and Environmental Manager at SSE. “With support from Steph’s team we are resourcing and committing to meaningful long-term actions at site and group programme levels.”
